Fair fishing PDF Print E-mail

When fishing is not done in a responsible manner there are possibilities of over fishing and damaging the underwater world. In the long run this results in a fall back of possible revenues from fishery. Open-net-cage salmon farming is another way of getting incomes from the sea. This option is under investigation in southern Chile.

But there are risks. Farmed fish can carry diseases and infect natural fish species. Also can they escape and threaten the local fish population. Pollution from farms can contaminate surrounding waters. And the sight of numerous fish nets can damage the tourism industry. The region is known for its virgin nature. Aquaculture seriously damages this image. That is why it is important to start such an economic development in a sustainable way.

To make a sustainable project in fishery reality Sustention brings together the different stakeholders. The cooperation of local fisherman, the local public body on fishery and companies like Salmon Chile.

After identifying the different interests we brainstorm in small groups to find possibilities for working together. Common goals aiming for profitable businesses, a higher quality of life and a healthy environment are formulated and jointly pursued.

An inspiring example of sustainable fish breeding is shown by Martin:

That it is necessary to look for alternatives is clear:
